The multi-donor collection of glass plate negatives spans from the late 19th into the 20th century, when this technology was used by professional and amateur photographers. Several years ago the Historical Society had the plates developed into prints, and more recently they scanned the prints into digital images. Some are identified as created by Rutland professional photographers, whereas others are from individual or family collections and the specific photographer is not identified. The professional photographers are: Louis Brehmer, George H. Emery, Frank Grimes, and Gunnar Sandell. The non-professional collections are: Leslie Crane/Ruth Hale, Charles Hayles, Virginia Gregory, Tuttle, Egelston, Sherrill Bates, Moore/Grimes, and Madame Clement. Of the over 1200 prints, many are not identified; many are of mediocre quality; and many are of the same frequently

photographed Rutland subjects. This image gallery represents the 500 best and most interesting ones. It should be noted that with today’s technology, images can be improved to bring out details not noticed in the original print.

Photos have been grouped by subject type and most have a brief title or caption.

The groupings are: Rutland, Industry & Business, Houses, Churches, Hospitals and Schools, Parades and Fair, Fires and, People, Transportation, Farms, Military, Places Other than Rutland, and Landscapes.
